A bedroom gallery wall has a different brief than a living room one. The bedroom is private. It's where a day begins and ends. The wall display here should feel personal rather than presentational — chosen for the person who sleeps in the room, not the people who visit it.
Above the Headboard
Above the headboard is the natural gallery wall position in a bedroom. The arrangement should be centred on the bed, not the wall — these are often the same, but not always. Width: roughly the same as the headboard or the bed itself. Height: the lowest frame should sit approximately one hand's width above the headboard top.
Two or three frames in a horizontal row is the most resolved layout for above a bed. It reads cleanly at the distance from which a bedroom wall is typically viewed and doesn't create visual busyness in a space meant to feel restful.
Frame Finish for a Bedroom
The bedroom calls for frames that feel considered without demanding attention. Natural wood in lighter finishes — pale oak, white-painted wood — reads calmly. Dark walnut or black frames work well in a room with a stronger, more dramatic palette. Minimal frames suit a bedroom where the wall should add texture without visual noise.
Avoid bold coloured frames in a bedroom unless the room's palette is built around the same colour. A neon frame in an otherwise calm bedroom is the last thing you want to look at when you can't sleep.
Subject Matter
The bedroom wall holds images you see every morning. They should be things you want to wake up to: personal photographs, prints from artists whose work you genuinely love, images from places that mean something. Decorative prints chosen for their inoffensiveness feel anonymous in a room this personal.
The Opposite Wall
The wall facing the bed — the first thing you see when you wake up — is often underused. A single significant piece on this wall, properly lit, can anchor the room more effectively than a gallery wall above the headboard. Consider whether a single strong piece on the facing wall does more than a more complex arrangement above the bed.
