A gallery wall done well looks effortless. The planning that produces that result is anything but. These are the tips and techniques that prevent the most common DIY gallery wall mistakes.
Plan on the Floor, Not the Wall
This is the single most valuable tip for any gallery wall. Lay all your frames on the floor in the arrangement you're considering. Step back. Look from standing height. Adjust. Photograph from directly above. This photograph becomes your hanging reference.
Every problem with the arrangement — a frame that's too large, spacing that doesn't work, an odd number that creates visual imbalance — is visible on the floor before anything touches the wall.
Use Paper Templates
Cut paper or cardboard to the exact outer dimensions of each frame. Tape the paper shapes to the wall with painter's tape before drilling anything. Move them around. Step back. Adjust. When you're happy with the arrangement, mark the hanging points through the paper. Remove the paper. The fixing positions are already marked.
This technique takes an extra twenty minutes and eliminates almost every gallery wall mistake.
Start from the Centre
Hang the most significant frame first, at the visual centre of the arrangement. All other frames are positioned in relation to it. Starting from an edge and working across means every subsequent frame compounds any error in the first placement.
Measure Spacing Precisely
Eyeballing spacing between frames never produces consistent results. Measure the gap between frames with a tape measure and mark it with a pencil before hanging each new frame. 5 to 8cm between frames is the standard range.
Level Every Frame
Check the level of every frame with a spirit level immediately after hanging. Don't rely on adjacent frames as reference — if the first is slightly off, every subsequent frame referenced against it will compound the error.
Add Felt Pads to Frame Backs
Small felt or rubber pads on the bottom two corners of each frame prevent the gradual drift that causes frames to go crooked over time on smooth walls. Apply them before hanging — much harder to add afterwards without taking the frame down.
The Morning-After Check
Check the level of every frame the morning after hanging, when fixings have settled into the wall. Most frames that need adjustment show it within the first 24 hours. After that, they typically stay where they are.
