How to Hang Frames Without Damaging Walls

Not every wall can be drilled. Rental agreements, listed buildings, tiled walls, and plasterboard too thin for reliable anchors all require alternatives to the standard drill-and-screw approach. The good news is that damage-free hanging has improved substantially — there are now options that hold frames reliably without leaving anything behind.

Adhesive Mounting Strips

Adhesive mounting strips — Command strips and similar products — are the most practical damage-free option for most frames. Correctly applied to a clean, dry surface, strips rated at twice the frame's weight hold reliably for years and remove cleanly without paint damage when the tab is pulled correctly.

Getting it right: The surface must be clean and completely dry before application. Press the strips firmly for thirty seconds. Wait the full recommended time before hanging — typically one hour. Do not hang until the adhesive has fully cured.

Weight limits: Strips have specific weight ratings. Check the combined weight of the frame and its contents against the strip rating before hanging. For frames over 2kg, strips alone are generally not the right solution.

Where they don't work: Textured walls, high-humidity rooms, and surfaces with a flat paint finish that hasn't fully cured. On textured walls, the contact area is reduced and the rated weight cannot be assumed. In humid rooms (bathrooms, some kitchens), adhesion degrades over time.

Adhesive Hooks

Heavy-duty adhesive hooks — rated up to 3–5kg — suit lighter frames in locations where strips would work but a hook design is more practical for the frame's hanging hardware.

Picture Rail Hooks

Many older homes have picture rails — a moulding near the ceiling designed for hanging frames with hooks and wire. Picture rail systems allow frames to be hung and repositioned without touching the wall. If your home has a picture rail, use it.

For Tiled Walls

Adhesive hooks designed for tiles and glass are available. Apply only to the tile surface, not the grout line, and follow the weight ratings strictly. For heavier frames on tiled walls, professional installation with specialist tile fixings is the right solution.

Knowing When to Drill

Damage-free options have real limits. For heavy frames, large gallery walls, or permanent installations in an owned home, drilling and using the appropriate wall fixing is always the more reliable solution. The small amount of filler and paint needed to fill two drill holes when you move is a reasonable trade for years of secure hanging.
