How to Clean and Care for Picture Frames

A well-made picture frame lasts decades with minimal maintenance. The main risk isn't age — it's the wrong cleaning approach at the wrong moment. These are the right approaches by material.

Wood Frames

Dust wood frames regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a microfibre duster. Dust that accumulates in carved or moulded details can be removed with a soft brush — a clean paintbrush works well.

For deeper cleaning, a slightly damp cloth (not wet) can remove accumulated grime from a painted or lacquered wood surface. Dry immediately after with a dry cloth — moisture left on wood causes swelling and finish damage.

For oiled or waxed solid wood frames, clean with a dry cloth only. Re-apply the original finish oil or wax periodically to maintain the surface. ONE MAAY's solid wood frames are finished with a process that maintains its quality with minimal intervention; a light dry dust every few weeks is generally sufficient.

Avoid: all-purpose household cleaners, glass cleaners on wood, wet cloths left in contact with the surface, abrasive cloths or sponges.

Aluminum and Metal Frames

Aluminum frames are among the lowest-maintenance frame materials. Dust with a microfibre cloth. For marks or fingerprints, a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap removes most residue. Dry immediately.

Avoid: abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or anything that could scratch the anodised or powder-coated surface.

Acrylic Frames

Acrylic scratches more easily than glass. Always use a soft microfibre cloth — never paper towels, tissue, or anything with texture that can create fine scratches over time.

For fingerprints and light dust, a dry microfibre cloth is usually sufficient. For more stubborn marks, a purpose-made acrylic cleaner or a small amount of water on a microfibre cloth. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners — they can cloud acrylic surfaces over time.

ONE MAAY's acrylic frames maintain their clarity with a microfibre cloth. Keep them away from abrasive surfaces and clean with the same care you'd give a lens.

Glass

Glass in frames can be cleaned with a glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth (not directly onto the glass, which risks liquid running into the frame and onto the artwork). Buff to clear with a dry microfibre cloth.

Do not press hard on glass in frames — the pressure can crack the glass or compress the backing and print.

The Art and Photograph Inside

If a print or photograph needs cleaning — which is rare when the frame is sealed — remove it from the frame first. Never attempt to clean inside a sealed frame. A conservator should be consulted for anything of value.
