Framing an art print at home is straightforward when the steps are followed in the right order. Most problems come from skipping a step — buying a frame that doesn't fit, not accounting for a mat, rushing the assembly. This guide covers the full process.
Step 1: Measure the Print First
Before buying a frame, measure your print. Note whether you're measuring the full paper size or just the image area (if the print has a white border). Decide whether you'll frame with or without a mat — this changes the frame size you need.
Without a mat: buy a frame whose inner opening matches your paper size exactly. Without a mat: the frame opening should match the paper dimensions.
With a mat: buy a frame larger than your paper to accommodate the mat border. A 5cm mat border on each side adds 10cm to both width and height.
See our frame measuring guide and mat guide for detail.
Step 2: Choose the Right Frame
The frame finish should suit both the print and the room. A warm wood frame for a warm-toned print or a room with natural materials. A slim metal frame for a contemporary print or a minimal room. An acrylic frame for a print you want to present without any border.
ONE MAAY's collections cover solid wood, aluminum alloy, and acrylic across standard sizes. See our guide on best frames for art prints for more detail.
Step 3: Prepare the Print
Handle the print by its edges. Fingerprints on a print can be permanent, particularly on matte or uncoated surfaces. If the print is rolled, flatten it under a heavy book for 24 hours before framing — a rolled print in a frame tends to curl away from the backing over time.
If you're using a mat, cut or order the mat before assembling the frame. The mat opening should be cut 3–4mm smaller than the print's image area on each side to overlap the print edge and prevent it from falling through.
Step 4: Assemble the Frame
Open the frame backing. If the frame has glass, clean it on both sides before assembly — a smear inside the glass is visible once the frame is sealed and the image is inside. Lay the glass on a clean surface.
Place components in order: glass first, then mat (if using), then print face down, then backing board, then close the backing. For frames with a rebate system, the components sit in the rebate in this order from front to back.
Ensure the print is centred within the mat opening before sealing the backing. Check through the front of the glass before fully closing.
Step 5: Hang It Level
Use a spirit level. There is no faster or more reliable method. See our guide to hanging picture frames for full detail.
